The taller boy's response surprised him. That smile it was so genuine and warm and Zayne wasn't sure what to do with it. He should have not trusted it, he know he should have scowled at the other boy. Instead though he found himself lowering his gaze just a bit, and it was likely quite fortunate indeed that he didn't know he was blushing just a bit. Zayne not only wasn't in the habit of blushing, but he had come to identify such a response as a bad thing. Certainly in the past he had only ever done such a thing because he was frustrated or embarrassed because of something the other children had said about him, or had done to him. Of course, he had only been a little boy back then. Back then he had still felt that maybe if he could just try hard enough they would maybe tolerate him. He had swore to himself he would be happy just with being allowed to just be around others without being made to hurt. Well, he had been young then, he hadn't known any better. After all, wasn't that what happened when one grew up? They learned the real way of the world
Still, even as he thought back a bit critically on the boy he had once been, a part of him did remember what it was like... just wanting so much to be a part of things... Maybe if someone had asked him to sit with them he would have been as pleased as the larger boy. No, he found he really couldn't think about being unkind just because the other was pleased about such a thing. Wasn't it odd though, that he had decided that bright smile was a for real smile, not the kind of smile everyone else used with him. Well, Eloise and Marci excluded of course. Now one might have thought that was enough of being thrown off for one day, but then the other boy introduced himself and extended his hand, and Zayne found himself staring a moment.
"Zayne... and he is Sterben... if he didn't already say so.", he offers very softly, though he had to actually set things down to return the handshake. Still he did return it, awkwardly but it was there, before picking up his tray again. "In the corner... we can keep an eye on things from there", he answers with a nod in the direction of said table, which indeed was away from the more active parts of the cafeteria, and of course, meant that two sides were protected, most importantly one of them was his back. Not that he thought any of them would be stupid enough to mess with him. So, if the other seemed agreeable, he would then either lead the way or walk with the other boy, depending on what Ransom did, to set his things on the table.
The other ghost responded calmly, and that threw the Banette off considerably, especially when the other drew closer. He wasn't used to this, and honestly he didn't know what to do.
"~I... I don't know ... I suppose. It's not like you are the type of ghost I have to worry about being around my child~", offered the Banette with some uncertainty. Perhaps it was good though that he hadn't just said no. Sure he was far from accepting things as they stood, but it could have been worse.
