If there was one thing Finnegan loved, it was exploring. It seemed to be the most viable option of fun in his youth and he had a knack for letting his feet lead him places. It wasn't to say he got lost often because he had a good sense of direction. The young adult prided himself on the fact he always seemed to know where he was going. Even if he sometimes didn't, eventually he did and made it seem like he always did know where he was going. Fake it till you make it! That was his motto anyways.
Hiking along the trail bored Finnegan after a while. The academy was remote, but the path was worn down by the footsteps, and probably paw steps of many other trainers and their pokemon. There had to be more interesting things to see in this place. Plus, no one ever encountered any wildlife following a trail. Figuring he could ignore the warning signs about the forest being dark and confusing, Finnegan easily wandered off the path without another thought. His Houndour, Liam, trotted along next to him at a comfortable pace, ears prickled. While he enjoyed the company of Bree as well, there wasn't a chance in the world he was going to let her gets twigs and dirt in her wool. Because guess who would have to clean that! No, Liam's slick, dark pelt was more suited for the forest, surprisingly so, considering he was a fire type. He only had to make sure he didn't accidently start a wildfire. That wouldn't go over too well.
Taking a deep breath, he avoided a lower hanging branch by ducking around it, only to stop in his tracks in his half crouch. A roar was audible, one that seemed familiar to him. Not that he really recalled ever hearing it this close, which was what he was freaking out about the most. He turned his gaze to Liam, hoping he had just imagined it, but the raised hackles and alert ears told him otherwise. Crouching down to Liam's level, he gave the hardy pokemon a scratch between the ears, knowing he would probably ignore it. As much as his senses were telling him to turn around, Finnegan proceeded to carefully and more quietly move in the direction of the noise. If the creature was that close, he figured it would have noticed them already, right? That was sound reasoning and judgment.
